Main topic:

Looking beyond EU. Non-EU indirect taxes

We already have confirmation from Donato Raponi from the EC. There will be speakers also from the Swiss and Maltese Tax Administrations. Focus of the conference will be global VAT / GST update, covering Mexico, Russia, Morocco, Australia, New Zealand and Norway. From the Business perspective we will have Geroge Salis from Vertext (USA) and Christoph Lybeer from Johnson & Johnson (Switzerland). Richard Asquith will talk about the VAT implications of Brexit. Stefan Maunz will present latest technical VAT cases, and we will also have a special slot on the latest issues with VAT refunds.

Andrew Sommer, Clayton Utz (Australia)

Andrew is acknowledged as one of Australia's best tax lawyers. He is an expert in indirect taxation, with a particular specialty in complex GST issues.

He is called upon to advise on all aspects of the GST for any major projects or transaction. He advises clients on financial structuring (including securitisation), property dealings and commercial transactions. Andrew has particular experience in conducting and managing disputes with revenue authorities.

Although Andrew's practice is primarily focused on GST, he is a notable expert on various tax issues including income tax, payroll tax, fringe benefits tax and R&D tax incentives. Before joining Clayton Utz, Andrew worked at a major accounting firm.

Brendon Silver - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Brendon Silver, VATit GROUP (UK)

Brendon is the Managing Director of the European and North American operations of the VATit Group, which includes VAT Compliance Europe. The group offers VAT recovery and VAT Compliance solutions globally. Brendon runs the day to day operations of the business, is responsible for acquisitions and partnerships, and has strategic oversight of the businesses. He also sits of the board of Directors of the Group Holding Company based in Luxembourg. Brendon is a qualified Chartered Accountant, and worked in Finance in the city of London for 4 years prior to joining VATit.

 Christoph Lybeer - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Christoph Lybeer, Johnson & Johnson (Switzerland)

Christoph Lybeer is Sr. VAT Manager at Johnson & Johnson c/o Cilag GmbH International based in Zug, Switzerland. He advises the Finance, Tax and Supply Chain Management of the company on setting up new supply chains in accordance to indirect tax regulations and is part of various project groups. Moreover, he advises the business to use correct Indirect Tax clauses and Incoterms in new contracts and reviews existing contracts.

Prior to joining J&J, he worked as Tax & Legal Manager for Hertz Car Rental in Frankfurt, Germany and as a Tax Consultant for Big 4 Companies in Belgium and Germany.

He graduated from the University of Leuven, Belgium with a Master in Law. In addition, he also acquired the Degree of LL.M. Taxation at the Kaleidos UAS, Zurich, Switzerland.

 Claude Grosjean - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Claude Grosjean, Swiss Federal Tax Administration

 

Claude is deputy head of the tax policy division at the Swiss Federal Tax Administration. He was intimately involved in the total revision of the Federal Act on VAT in 2010 and is responsible for the amendments of the VAT-Act and Ordinances since 2011. The latest amendments of the VAT-Act will be endorsed by the Parliament this year. Claude is a member of the OECD Working Party No. 9 on Consumption Taxes and was a member of the OECD BEPS-Task Force on the Digital Economy.

Graduated from HEC in 1997 with a specialisation in Finances, Cyrille Konter started his career in Germany within various investment banks as structureur and seller of derivatives on action. In 2003, he returns to France to take over the business development of TEVEA International.

Donato Raponi - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Donato Raponi, European Commission

Mr. Donato Raponi joined the European Commission in 1980 and is currently Head of the VAT Unit. He worked in the Budget, Internal Market and Taxation Directorates.

In the area of taxation policy he served in different posts, e.g. administrator, assistant to the Director, Deputy Head of the VAT Unit, Head of the Unit dealing with excise duties, environment, transport and energy duties and Head of tax administration and anti fiscal fraud Unit.

Mr. Raponi holds a Masters degree in European Tax Law and a Bachelor in Economics. He is Co-Author of the book “Arriva l’euro” (Carmenta Editor) and several articles in tax matters. He is professor of European Tax Law at Ecole supérieure des sciences fiscales, Brussels, Belgium.

Emmanuel Cotessat - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Emmanuel is a French tax lawyer specializing exclusively in indirect taxes (VAT, Excise and Customs duties). After 10 years of experience at Price Waterhouse Tax and Legal and then Arthur Andersen International, he started his own consulting law firm in 2000. He has specifically built a significant experience in international supply chain structuring, ERP/SAP VAT implementations and multi-national advisory and compliance coordination. His main areas of activity are pharmaceuticals, energy utilities, aeronautics and chemicals. He is a partner of VAT Forum CV and regularly lectures at international VAT events.

Fernando Matesanz - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Fernando Matesanz, Spanish VAT Services Asesores (Spain)

Fernando Matesanz is the owner and Director of the firm named Spanish VAT Services Asesores SL. He Counts on more than twelve years of experience in providing advice in VAT and other Indirect Taxes.

Fernando holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Degree in European Legislation. He also holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Corporate Tax Law from the IE Business School.

He is an active Tax Lawyer, member of the Bar and a certified Tax Advisor.

Fernando began his carrier within the VAT Group of Ernst & Young, managing the VAT and customs practice for more than eight years. After that, he founded the firm Spanish VAT Services Asesores SL a firm exclusively working on international VAT matters and other Indirect taxes. Spanish VAT Services is currently one of the main VAT services providers for small and medium-sized companies within the Spanish market.

Fernando regularly acts as speaker and lecturer in different Universities and organizations. He is also a member of the VAT Forum CV.

Dr. George L. Salis is a recognised economist and lawyer specializing in the area of international economic law, including trade, global taxation, and transfer pricing. Presently, he serves as Principal Senior--Tax Compliance at Vertex, Inc., one of the top tax software companies in the world. He is an adjunct professor of Texas A&M University School of Law for transfer pricing and international tax risk management courses as well as an adjunct professor of international taxation and of the transfer pricing concentration at Thomas Jefferson School of Law's Graduate International Taxation Program in San Diego, California. Dr. Salis received his Ph.D. (Union) in International & Comparative Law & Economic Policy, and his LL.M. with Honours (Magna Cum Laude) (Thomas Jefferson) in International Taxation and Financial Services. He read law at the University of Wolverhampton and in 1998, he received his LL.B. Honours law degree at the University of Wolverhampton School of Law in England, and later received the Specialist Diploma in European Union Law from Holborn College London & Oxford University. He earned an M. A. in Legal & Ethical Studies from The University of Baltimore, in 1988. He also holds two Bachelor's degrees, one in in Economics & Political Science (dual concentration) with Honours, and another in Philosophy & Humanities. In 2014, he attended the Academy of European Law at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and received its Advanced Certificate in EU Law. Gerardo Nieto, Basham, Ringe y Correa (Mexico)

Graduated in 1989, Gerardo Nieto has undertaken postgraduate courses in tax law at Universidad Panamericana and foreign universities. Gerardo Nieto is currently a partner of the law firm Basham, Ringe y Correa. Gerardo has represented clients in tax litigation; various important tax precedents have been created by cases in which he has been involved. For 17 years, has been a professor of tax law postgraduate studies at Universidad Panamericana, both in the Mexico City and the Guadalajara campuses. Former National President of the Mexican Corporate Counsel Association, better known as “ANADE”, 2011-2012. Is a member of the International Fiscal Association (“IFA”), Mexican Chapter, where he has been a reporter, representing Mexico at various IFA World Congresses. He is World President of the Tax Practice Group of Lex Mundi (the world’s leader network of independent Law Firms).Gerardo has been a spokesperson representing Mexico at the ABA and lecturer in various national and international forums.

Lalla Zineb Dahbi, ASD Trading Group Maroc (Morocco)

Lalla Zineb Dahbi is the head of agency of ASD GROUP in Morocco since 2012, dealing with management of international trade by carrying tax, customs, and social formalities. Between 2011 and 2012 she was responsible for internal audit and management control in CUBAMAR-DECORA in production, manufacture, sale and installation of kitchens.

From 2009 until 2011 she was the Audit Manager at LEYTON Morocco, dealing with operational audit in cost optimization to improve the financial and social performance of companies.

As a freelancer Lalla did market research interviewers, writing business documents (book of specifications, Internal rules, statutes, procedures manual, Business cards etc.), and assistantship to the creation and organization of SMEs. She also guided a practical training in internal audit and management control consultancy in AUDINA, and training in IAM PERFORMANCE.

Mark ORiordan - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Mark O'Riordan, Meridian Global Services (Ireland)

Mark O'Riordan is Chairman & Chief Executive in Meridian. Mark joined Meridian in 1998 and was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive in October 2004. Prior to this he was Operations Manager at BBL Finance Ireland, an international merchant bank based in the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin. Since 1998, Mark has held a variety of executive positions within Meridian, namely Operations Director, Managing Director North America, Client Services Director EMEA and Director of Business Services, Mark also had responsibility for the Groups Treasury requirements during this time. 

Mark took over the position of Chairman and Chief Executive in 2004 having acquired a vast knowledge of the business and the company.

Mark is a qualified Chartered Accountant (FCA) and holds an MBA from The Open University.

She counts on more than eighteen years of experience in providing advice in VAT and other Indirect Taxes. She is Co-Author of the book “Taxation of Foreign Companies and   branches in Russia” and several articles in tax matters. Olga is a member of National Advisory Council on Tax Legislation reforming. She regularly acts as speaker and lecturer in different organizations.

Olga holds a Masters degree in Economics and an MBA from the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO. Married, has 4 children.

Regine Schluckebier - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Regine Schluckebier, innoVATeLAW (Switzerland)

Regine is the founder and CEO of innoVATeLAW Llc. and a partner at Tax Advisors & Associates Switzerland AG, both located in Zurich.

She is an Attorney at Law and a VAT-Expert at the Swiss distance university of applied sciences (FFHS). Regine also regularly lectures at Swiss VAT-Certification Courses about Swiss and EU VAT law and also speaks at other national and international VAT events. Regine is Co-Editor of several publications including “The Swiss Value Added Tax ACT (MWSTG)”, “Commentary about the Swiss Value Added Tax Act (MWSTG)” and “ZollRevue” (periodical magazine about Swiss customs law and international trade law).

In 2006 she was a member of the standing committee of experts of the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (FTA) of the revision of the Swiss Value Added Tax Act (MWSTG).

Renate Swensen, Norwegian Tax Administration

Renate Swensen has a Bachelor degree in Business Administration and have been working with the Norwegian VAT refund scheme since 2009. She has previous experience from i.a. the real estate business. In addition to regular application/appeal work, she has been dedicated to the VAT refund schemes quality assurance relating to e.g. internal routines and system management.

Richard Asquith - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Richard Asquith, Avalara Europe

Richard is the VP Indirect Tax at Avalara, which provides close-based VAT and US Sales Tax software and services. Richard is responsible for helping Avalara’s thousands of clients understand their international VAT compliance obligations, and helping them remain fully compliant as they expand their operations. Richard previously established TMF Group’s VAT compliance business, and grew it into a multi-national service around the world. He qualified as an accountant at KPMG in the UK, and went on to work at EY in Hungary, Russia, France and the USA.

Dr. Stefan Maunz advises clients on all VAT matters and represents them in dealings with the tax authorities and before the tax courts, the German Federal Finance Court and the European Court of Justice. The majority of his clients consist of larger medium sized businesses, German corporate groups and foreign companies of all sizes. He regularly lectures on VAT topics at both the domestic and international level. A further important focus is advising on customs issues, in particular, those connected with import VAT.

Stephen Dale is a partner in the Indirect Tax group and compliance services in PwC Société d’Avocats and has worked in French taxation for more than twenty years, having previously worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK.

Susanne Dybdahl - IVA Zurich Conference - October 2016

Susanne Dybdahl, Danish Tax and Custom Administration (SKAT)

Susanne is a senior counsellor at the Danish Tax and Custom Administration (SKAT) in Denmark. She is an expert in the business processes for VAT in Denmark.

She has specialized in the cross-border schemes and has been involved in defining as well the business processes as the it-systems that support the VIES-system, the VAT refund scheme and the Mini One Stop Shop.

Before joining the Danish Tax and Custom Administration, Susanne worked in the Ministry of Finance with different support schemes for farms and house owners and later she was involved in various projects that were more it-related in the office of innovation.
