Romania

From 1 January 2023, the Romanian tax authorities are proposing to raise the VAT rate on certain goods and services, including:

Fizzy drinks from 9% to 19%

Hotel and similar short-term accommodation from 5% to 9%

Supplies of food and non-alcoholic drinks made by caterers (including cafés and restaurants) from 5% to the 9%

Switzerland

The Swiss tax authorities are proposing to increase VAT rates in the country as follows:

Standard rate – 7.7% to 8.1%

Reduced rate – 2.5% to 2.6%

Special VAT rate for accommodation – 3.7% to 3.8%

This proposal is being put forward to cover the pension deficit caused by the ‘baby boomer’ generation, and if accepted, the rises will be implemented from January 2024.
